Step 5: Remove drive(s) from Tivo Unit

  1. If you have a brand new Tivo, you will want to run the guided setup prior to upgrade. This will reduce your potential backup problems and also reduce your backup size and verify that your Tivo is operational. Also if it is a newly activated unit, you will generally want to wait a day until the unit has downloaded the latest version of operating software. Also remember that upgrading or modifying your Tivo will void your factory warranty.

  2. When you are ready to upgrade, check the software revision in your Tivos on screen setup or administration menu and note the version number (ie.4.x,3.x,2.5,etc), and then unplug the Tivo unit. This is very important to prevent damage from electrical shock. Remove the torx screws on the rear of the Tivo and carefully remove the Tivo cover.

  3. Be especially careful not to touch the power supply as it can still give an electrical shock and damage hardware even when unplugged. Disconnect the IDE cables and power connectors to the Tivo hard drive(s). Tivo series 1 standalone units will unscrew the 2 screws holding the drive bracket(s) to the Tivo frame, and slide the drives out with the bracket connected. Those with Directv with Tivo and original series 2 units will need to remove the entire metal drive tray holding the Tivo hard drive(s). Temporarily unplug the fan connector and unscrew the 2 screws on the side of the unit. On most units you will be able to slide the drive bracket out at this point. Some Sony T-60 units however have a third screw on the reverse side of the metal divider, behind the power supply. Be careful not to touch the power supply when removing. Once you have successfully removed the brackets and drive(s), you need to unscrew the drives from the brackets. (This may not be necessary if your PC's IDE cables and power connectors are long enough)

  4. If you have more than one factory drive, you will want to label which drive is the A drive and which is the B drive. As a rule, the A drive is usually connected at the end of the IDE cable, while the B drive is connected in the middle. They may also be labeled with colored stickers. If you are unable to determine which is which, you can also examine the jumper settings on the Tivo hard drive, the A drive will be set to "Master" or "Cable Select" while the B drive will be set to "Slave" or have no jumpers.

Series 2 Tivo Caution!!

This is for Series 2 Tivo and Series 2 Directv with Tivo Owners: When looking inside your Series 2 TiVo, you will notice a white ribbon cable running from the front panel of the TiVo to the motherboard. It is a white ribbon cable that plugs directly into the motherboard.

NEVER power-up your TiVo with this cable either slightly or completely removed from the motherboard. It must be firmly seated when you power up the TiVo.

Here's the reason: Doing so can permanently damage your TiVo. In some cases, the TiVo will power up but will not respond to the remote. In other cases, the TiVo will not power up at all (and will just click). With the HDVR2 and, potentially, the other Series2 TiVos, even if you later plug this cable back in, your TiVo still may not respond to your remote.

Therefore, when removing the power cable and IDE cable from your TiVo's factory hard drive, be VERY careful of this cable. Do not dislodge it. If you do dislodge it, just re-insert the cable before powering up.

If your Series 2 Tivo is damaged due to this problem:

Warning: Needs very good SMT component soldering skill. Please DON'T DIY if you never work on SMT before. Ask some one with the skill or bring your Tivo to an electronics repair shop let the technician do it for you.

Who need fix: If you power up the HDVR2 with ribbon cable unevenly plug into CN10 on motherboard and found the Remote malfunction. Most likely you need this fix.

Cause: HDVR2 use 3 pins IR sensor (in front panel). Pin1=+5V, Pin2=Ground, Pin3=IR signal out. For general circuit design, usually direct connects pin2 to common ground. But HDVR2 IR sensor pin2 goes through a ribbon cable and Inductor L30 on the motherboard side connects to ground. When ribbon cable unevenly plug into CN10, The contact pins on cable cause shortage between pins inside CN10. When power up the Tivo, DC current from shorted pins inside CN10 goes through Inductor L30 to ground. If enough current apply to L10, it’ll generates too much heat and burned open. The IR sensor pin2 will no longer connect to ground even you plug back the ribbon cable right next time.

Fix: Replace L30 (inside red circle on the attached picture) with a new one (any value will work). If can't find any inductor, just use a thin wire short L30 will work.

Step 6: Connecting drive to your computer

  1. Now you will need to locate our primary and secondary IDE cables in the computer you will be using for the upgrade. As a rule, computers with more than one hard drive will have the master drive connected at the end of the IDE cable, while the slave will be connected at the middle. Configurations vary, however your Windows boot "C" drive is usually connected to the primary IDE cable. The secondary IDE port may not be in use at all if you have only one drive and a CD ROM. If there is only one IDE cable on your computer, you can trace it back to the motherboard and you will find a secondary port where you can connect the secondary cable. The cable is only designed to go one way, so ensure that the colored strip on the secondary cable is the same way as the primary cable.
  2. For ease of installation and to minimize jumper changes, a particular IDE hard drive connections have been selected for the upgrade, which will leave the secondary slave port available for the CD ROM/CD-RW drive, wherever possible. However, your TiVo drives and CD-ROM/CD-RW can be connected to any IDE port you wish. Just make sure to adjust the drive jumpers and all the command options to follow accordingly. If you plan to backup your drive (Recommended) then your DOS/Windows fat32 C: drive or partition should be left as primary master. Here is a table of the Linux IDE drive designations so that you can make changes to the utility commands if you are using a different drive configuration than I have outlined:

hda – Primary Master (DOS/Windows fat32 C: drive or partition)
    hdb – Primary Slave
    hdc – Secondary Master
    hdd – Secondary Slave

Latest Highlights
The Godfather, Part II AMC 8:00 pm  ET

The second -- and best -- installment of Francis Ford Coppola's Oscar-winning "Godfather" trilogy, based on Mario Puzo's novel, includes flashbacks to Vito Corleone's early days in 1920s New York. Robert De Niro won an Oscar for his performance as the young don. Al Pacino returns as Michael Corleone, now running the family's criminal empire from Lake Tahoe, Nev.

Frost/Nixon MAX 10:00 pm  ET

Skillfully directed by Ron Howard, Peter Morgan's adaptation of his own play recharged stage veteran Frank Langella's screen career through his masterful portrayal of former President Richard Nixon. As the ex-chief executive prepares to be interviewed by David Frost (Michael Sheen, also excellent) about the Watergate scandal, both sides jockey to be in the best light during the telecasts. Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and Toby Jones offer top-notch support.

The Wanda Sykes Show FOX 11:00 pm  ET

The late-night talk show arena wasn't especially kind to Joan Rivers, but it's been good to Chelsea Handler, and now Wanda Sykes -- fresh off her funny HBO special and her recurring role in "The New Adventures of Old Christine" -- weighs into the fray with her own blend of comedy and topical commentary, which is set to include panels to discuss current events a la Bill Maher's HBO chatfest.

NASCAR Racing ESPN2 12:45 pm  ET

Kyle Busch can all but seal his first Nationwide Series championship down in Fort Worth with a win in today's O'Reilly Challenge. He won here a year ago on the 1.5-mile oval at Texas Motor Speedway, holding off a hard-charging Carl Edwards by three car lengths in the closing laps. But despite a series-leading 10 wins in '08, Busch would wind up finishing sixth in the standings, 671 points behind champ Clint Bowyer.

Horse Racing ABC 1:30 pm  ET

If the Triple Crown is the World Series of Thoroughbred racing, today's Breeders' Cup World Championship from Santa Anita Park in Southern California is undoubtedly the sport's Super Bowl. At stake are championships in, among others, the sprint, turf, ladies, mile, juvenile and classic categories, the last expected to be contested by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and British horse Rip Van Winkle.

College Football NBC 2:30 pm  ET

Years of famine have given way to a modest feast of sorts for No. 25 Notre Dame, who lead the Independent standings ahead of Navy, their opponents today in South Bend, Ind. The Fighting Irish are led by junior Jimmy Clausen, a Heisman candidate and, at this writing, the nation's top passer, who will be looking downfield for his favorite target, junior wideout Golden Tate. The unranked Midshipmen will be relying on the arm and legs of junior QB Ricky Dobbs.

The Prince & Me ABCF 7:30 pm  ET

The grammatically tone-deaf title is actually one of the lesser problems with this half-baked gender-switched reworking of the "Roman Holiday" premise, wherein a Danish prince (Luke Mably) charms a pre-med student (Julia Stiles) who thinks he's a "common" exchange student. It could have been worse without the two leads, but that's hardly royal praise.

Mercy NBC 8:00 pm  ET

Having just announced to her family that she is trying to have a baby, Veronica (Taylor Schilling) tries to save a pregnant woman in the aftermath of a car wreck. Dr. Harris (James LeGros) calls for a hearing to determine Veronica's future at Mercy Hospital. Sonia (Jaime Lee Kirchner) helps a sleepwalking patient and tries to take her relationship with Valentino (Charlie Semine) to another level in the new episode "You Lost Me With the Cinderblock."

Take the Money and Run TCM 8:00 pm  ET

Remember when Woody Allen movies were pure slapsticky silliness? Miss those days? Then don't miss this chance to see the first film that Allen not only wrote and directed but starred in, playing a hapless criminal who can't seem to buy a break ... or steal one. It's also an early example of the "mockumentary" style of storytelling that came into its own with "This Is Spinal Tap." Janet Margolin ("Ghostbusters II") is Allen's leading lady.

Robin Hood BBCAM 9:00 pm  ET

Robin (Jonas Armstrong) asks why Isabella (Lara Pulver) has made a pact with Prince John to become the new Sheriff of Nottingham. Defiant Isabella insists she works for herself. Not convinced, Robin offers her a deal to work with him for the rightful king of England, Richard the Lionheart, or discover what it is to be enemies. At a court hearing, Sheriff Isabella shows clemency to a young wench (Holliday Grainger) who has stood up to the men in her life.

Superhero Movie SHO 9:00 pm  ET

Love stories, horror films and gladiator epics have all had their sendups, so the likes of "Spider-Man" and "Batman" get theirs in this weak entry in the "cobble together random movie references and call it satire" genre. Drake Bell plays a young man bitten by a genetically altered dragonfly, turning him into a superpowered hero known as -- of all things -- the Dragonfly. He pines for lovely Jill (Sara Paxton, "Aquamarine") while using his new abilitiesto combat the sinister Hourglass (Christopher McDonald).
